spxlMaskMixer is an alternative to the 50 Mask blend mode that comes with Resolume (Avenue and Arena). It masks the input texture (eg layers below) based on individual pixel brightness, something like a luma key, respecting existing alpha channel values of the layer(s) below and the mask layer.

Resolume's Mask and 50 Mask blend modes tend to make most (mask) colours, especially blues, washed out or weak.

spxlMaskMode will give back some solidity for your blues (in the mask). The spxlMaskMode default settings produce mostly good results compared to Resolume's 50 Mask, and tuning the Upper and Lower parameters can produce much better results for many image content scenarios.

Parameters

  • Lower : mask pixels with color brightness lower than this will behave like completely black/transparent mask pixels; think of as the "black point"
  • Upper : mask pixels with color brightness higher than this will behave like completely white mask pixels (limited by the alpha channel value); think of as the "white point"

Note that is is possible to set the Lower value higher than the Upper value, in which case the masking operation is inverted (black for solid, white for transparent). When Upper and Lower values are close, there is a short cross-dissolve to handle the edge cases where the function doesn't work nicely. If Lower is greater than zero, the mix result tends toward fully transparent. Otherwise, the mix tends toward a "white" mask (limited by the mask's alpha channel value).

There may be variations of the Wire plugin in the downloads, but you should use just one with the same base name as they all have the same plugin identifier.

If the Wire version number is higher than your version of Resolume, it will probably not work, which is why I have provided a legacy version (Resolume v7.4 was the first version with Wire plugins).

The filename for each Wire plugin indicates the version of Wire used to compile the plugin, and the end of the filenames have a file version made from the date and time.

Plugins with "-id" after the Wire version identify the version in the display name in Resolume, eg spxlPlugName 7.4.1 instead of just spxlPlugName.

Due to extremely limited screen space for blend modes in Resolume, mixer display names have been reduced, eg to _PlugName 7.4 where the "_" is short for "spxl" (which is short for "subpixel"), and the last point of the Wire version has been dropped.

Example: spxlPlugName-wire-7.4.1_v260131-2359.cwired

  • compiled with Resolume Wire version 7.4.1
  • on date in YYMMDD format: 31 Jan 2026
  • at time in HHMM format (24-hour clock): 23:59 (11:59PM)

Minimum host requirement: Resolume v7.4.1 (Windows and macOS)

Compiled with Resolume Wire v7.4.1 (Win11).

Tested with Resolume Arena v7.4.1, 7.23.2 (Win11).
